Climb the Clock Tower

May 18, 2017

Clock Tower Now Open With Spectacular Views of Washington D.C.

After a three-year renovation, the 315-foot Clock Tower at the Old Post Office Pavilion in Washington D.C. is now open for your Washington D.C. School Trip to visit!  Centrally located between the White House and the U.S. Capitol, the Clock Tower provides a sweeping 360-degree view of our Nation’s Capital (also currently the highest public vantage point for viewing Washington until the Washington Monument’s construction is completed).
The landmark Old Post Office Pavilion was completed in 1899 and occupies an entire city block, centered on the north side of the Federal Triangle along Pennsylvania Avenue.  The Pavilion was used as the city’s main post office until 1914.
The clock tower tour includes exhibits about the building’s history.  Inside, your Washington D.C. educational tour group will view an enormous flag hangs in the lobby.  It is tied to a tradition begun by postal workers on June 14, 1908, when they sang the “Star-Spangled Banner” in front of a flag.  The tradition evolved into the annual June 14 observance of Flag Day.
The tower also provides student tour groups with a view of the interior workings of the illuminated clock.  The official United States Bells of Congress, a bicentennial gift from England celebrating the end of the Revolutionary War, are also on view.  If your Washington D.C. school trip visits on a Thursday evening or on a special occasion, your student tour will enjoy listening to the Washington Ringing Society as it sounds the Bells of Congress.
