Once a home to slaves, Williamsburg seeks to commemorate and honor the city’s rich history of African-Americans through a variety of programs and events during Black History Month.  Visitors can relive the proud heritage through sites, artifacts, events and museums throughout the city.

(1)  Come ring the bell for freedom at the Historic First Baptist Church in Williamsburg.  It had a busy year of being restored by Colonial Williamsburg Foundation’s experts, rung by locals and visitors last February and rang in Washington, D.C. at the dedication of the National Museum of African American History and Culture.  Sign up to ring this historic bell.

(2)  Jamestown Settlement brings the story of the first Africans who arrived in the new country alive.  A museum of 17th-century Virginia history and culture, America’s first permanent English colony is explored through film, galleries and living history in outdoor re-creations of a Powhatan Indian village, English ships and a 1610-14 colonial fort.

(3)  Colonial Williamsburg has several programs centered around black artists in a series called Films of Faith and Freedom.  An outstanding collection of African-American films, including Loving, Moonlight, Black Girl, and Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise. Enjoy  performances of  Journey to RedemptionA Gathering of Hair and God is My Rock.

(4) At the American Revolution Museum, a number of permanent exhibits tell the story of African-Americans involved in the Revolutionary War.  Thousands helped America’s thirteen colonies establish their independence from Great Britain, then they returned to lives as mere property.

(5) The Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg will host an exhibit of rare quilts.  Six of the twelve African-American quilts will be displayed for the first time and were created between 1875 and 1975.  Learn the story behind this stunning artistic tradition and the quilt-makers who crafted these bold and colorful designs.
