In April 30, 1789, the first Presidential Inauguration took place in front of Federal Hall in New York City.  George Washington, our nation’s first President took the oath of office on a balcony overlooking Wall Street.  Following the ceremony, the crowd cheered and
President Washington returned to the Senate chamber to deliver the first Inaugural address.

Since Washington, inaugural ceremonies have been held in Congress Hall in Philadelphia, the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C., the Old Brick Capitol, the White House. Weather permitting, the ceremonial swearing-in is held outside of the Capitol building on its western side.
