What’s New with Colonial Capital Tours in Washington D.C….

2011 saw the dedication of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial on the National Mall. Situated in a dramatic alignment with the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials, it is inscribed with some of the great man’s famous words.

The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool has just undergone a two year $30 million restoration project. Improvements include increased lighting, sidewalks in place of dirt pathways and improved accessibility from the pool level to the MemorialPlaza.

At the SmithsonianMuseum of American History, a new exhibit will commemorate both  the 50th anniversary of Dr. MLK’s “I Have A Dream” speech in Washington D.C. and  the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation which effectively ended slavery.

The historic Howard Theater has reopened after being closed for more than 30 years following a $29 million renovation. This grand old building has hosted musical greats such as Duke Ellington and Aretha Franklin.

Ground has been broken for the new SmithsonianMuseum of African American History and Culture. The museum is being constructed on a five acre site and is scheduled to open some time in 2015.
